Now vote for a great charity with proven results!
We've seen how important it is to find charities with a proven track record of positive impact. There are experts who specialize in doing just that. Independent charity evaluator GiveWell.org has been called "the gold standard of giving" by the Boston Globe. GiveWell has invested thousands of hours of research to find outstanding giving opportunities. You'll get to pick between GiveWell's top two recommended charities.
AMF provides long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (for protection against malaria) in bulk to other organizations, which then distribute them in developing countries. Malaria is a major problem in sub-Saharan Africa. Over 1 million people -- mostly children -- die each year. Insecticide-treated bed nets prevent deaths and many other non-fatal cases of malaria and are relatively inexpensive -- about $5 per net. Read GiveWell's review of AMF here.
GiveDirectly transfers cash to households in the developing world via the M-PESA mobile phone-based payment service. It targets extremely low-income households and aims to deliver at least 90 cents directly to recipients for every $1.00 in total expenses. Directly transferring money to the very poor allows recipients to purchase that which they believe will help them most. Strong evidence indicates that cash transfers lead recipients to spend more on their basic needs (such as food) and may allow recipients to make investments with very high returns, with no evidence of large increases in spending on items like alcohol or tobacco. GiveWell has written a blog post about their recommendations, including strengths and weaknesses for each organization, and suggestions for donors trying to determine which of these charities best match their values.
You can vote for one of these outstanding charities by filling out the survey below. We'll donate $5 as chosen by everyone who votes before July 31, 2016, up to a total of $1,000.
